AI citation optimization, engine by engine
AI citation optimization means tracking which sources AI engines cite when your customers ask questions, and changing the things most likely to make your brand one of them. Each engine behaves differently, so we measure each one, fix what matters for it, and check again.

Engines cite differently
A Semrush study of 5,000 keywords and more than 150,000 citations, published in July 2025, compared AI citations with Google's top 10 organic results. Over 91% of domains Perplexity cited also ranked there, against about 45% for ChatGPT.
The practical reading: for Perplexity and AI Overviews, ranking well in ordinary search does much of the work. For ChatGPT and AI Mode, which reach further, being mentioned and described accurately across the web likely matters more. The page-level work behind both is on adult GEO and adult AEO.
The measurement loop
- 01Ask
The same set of real customer questions, in each engine, every month.
- 02Record
Whether you are named, whether you are cited, and which sources are.
- 03Fix
The page, passage or crawler setting most likely to change the answer.
- 04Recheck
The same questions again, to see whether it worked.
We measure to decide what to fix, not to produce reports for their own sake. Setting up the prompt set is part of the readiness audit; the checklist behind it is in our research on AI search readiness.
What the 2026 data adds
Newer studies point the same way and go further. Ahrefs compared the links cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot with Google's top 10 for the same prompt across 15,000 prompts and found an average overlap of only about 12%, with ChatGPT near 8%; Perplexity was the exception, with nearly one in three of its citations ranking in the top 10. For AI Overviews, Ahrefs' March 2026 update of 863,000 keywords found that 38% of cited pages ranked in the top 10, down from 76% in its mid-2025 study, and that around 31% did not rank in the top 100 at all. BrightEdge, using a different method, put the figure nearer 17%.
Ahrefs also found in December 2025 that AI Overviews and AI Mode cite the same URLs only about 13.7% of the time. Two Google products, mostly different sources.
For adult brands this widens the field in a useful way. If engines draw on deeper pages and on sources outside the first page of results, then a well-made care guide, sizing page or materials explainer can be cited even when your category pages never rank in the top three. Those are exactly the safe-for-work pages described on adult GEO, and the place to start is usually the questions your support team already answers.
Why the studies disagree
Figures from 12% to over 90% can all be correct, because the studies measure different things. Some compare domains, so a citation of any page on a site that ranks counts; others compare exact pages. Some use the top 10, others the top 100. Some match the citation to the keyword someone searched, others to a longer prompt typed into an assistant. Domain-level studies such as Semrush's show high overlap; page-level studies such as Ahrefs' show low overlap.
The useful reading for a brand: authority in ordinary search still helps you get cited, especially in Perplexity and AI Overviews, but ranking a particular page does not guarantee that page is the one quoted. Engines often cite a deeper page on a trusted site, or a third party that describes you. That is why we measure your own question set rather than relying on any average.
What we fix, engine by engine
| Engine | What tends to move citations |
|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Strong pages across the site, including deeper guides, with clear answers and up-to-date facts |
| Google AI Mode | The same foundations, plus coverage of the follow-up questions people ask in a conversation |
| Perplexity | Ranking well in ordinary search and keeping pages fresh, since it follows search results more closely |
| ChatGPT | Allowing OAI-SearchBot, and accurate descriptions of your brand on the third-party sites it trusts |
Patterns, not laws: the engines change their retrieval often, which is why each fix is followed by a recheck on the same questions.
The third-party sources that shape answers
When engines do not cite you, they usually cite someone talking about your category. Peec AI's March 2026 look at some 30 million citations found community, video and reference sites, among them Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn and Wikipedia, near the top overall, with the mix shifting from one industry to the next. For adult and sexual wellness brands, the sources we see most in testing are discussion threads, independent review and comparison sites, wellness and health publications, and video reviews.
The honest way into those sources is slow: products and guides good enough that people discuss them, accurate information supplied to reviewers who ask, and openly branded answers where the platform's rules allow it. Undisclosed posts, paid reviews presented as independent and planted comments break those platforms' rules and, once found, tend to end up as the very thing engines quote about you.
When an engine gets your brand wrong
- Find where the wrong claim comes from. Cited answers show their sources; for uncited ones, search for the claim's wording.
- Fix your own pages first, so the correct fact is stated plainly where engines look for it.
- Ask the third-party site to correct its page, with evidence, through its normal editorial or support route.
- Use each assistant's feedback option on the wrong answer.
- Recheck after the pages have been recrawled, which can take weeks.
For adult brands the usual errors are outdated product details, confusion with a similarly named business, and descriptions that lump a lawful brand in with services it has nothing to do with. Each is fixable, though rarely overnight.
How progress is judged
For the fixed question set, each month: the share of answers in each engine that name your brand, the share that cite your pages, which pages are cited, the third-party sources cited instead of you, and any statements about your brand that are wrong. Single months are noisy, since the same question can draw a different answer each time it is asked, so we report the trend, and we never promise that a page will be cited. Plans that include this tracking are listed under pricing.
Earning mentions, honestly
- Publish data or guides others genuinely want to cite.
- Keep your brand facts consistent everywhere they appear.
- Answer questions openly, under your brand name, where people ask them.
- No promotional Wikipedia articles or disguised Reddit posts
- No paid placements dressed up as independent reviews
Technical groundwork, including the crawlers each engine uses, is on AI search optimization.
Questions
Q.01
Why do different AI engines cite different sources?
They retrieve differently. Studies comparing citations with Google results found Perplexity and AI Overviews closely follow the top organic results, while ChatGPT and AI Mode draw more widely. One plan will not fit every engine.
Q.02
Can you get us onto Wikipedia or Reddit?
We will not write promotional Wikipedia articles or post disguised comments on Reddit. Both break the rules of those sites and tend to backfire. We help you earn mentions honestly, for example through useful data others want to cite.
Q.03
How do you measure citations?
A fixed set of real customer questions, asked in each engine on a schedule, with the answers and cited sources recorded. The results move, so we look at trends over months.
Q.04
Is this the same as a full AI visibility audit?
No. We measure to decide what to fix and to check that it worked. Deep share-of-voice research across a whole market is a separate discipline.
Q.05
Does ranking first on Google guarantee an AI citation?
No. Studies in 2026 found that many cited pages do not rank in the top 10 for the same search, and that AI Overviews and AI Mode often cite different pages. Strong rankings help, especially for Perplexity and AI Overviews, but they are not enough on their own.
