Adult GEO: getting AI engines to quote you correctly

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the work of making your pages the ones AI engines draw on when they answer a question. For lawful adult brands that means factual, safe-for-work passages with sources, the crawler settings that keep you citable, and nothing that tries to trick a model.

Prompt

How do I choose a body-safe lubricant?

Answer

Look for a water-based formula without the ingredients some people react to, and check it is compatible with any products you use it with.

What the research found

The term comes from "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization", a paper by Aggarwal and colleagues accepted at KDD 2024. Testing on a benchmark of 10,000 queries, the authors found that adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics could raise a source's visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, and by up to 37% on Perplexity.

From the paper

Which edits moved visibility

Hypothesis
Content edits change how often a source appears in AI answers.
Method
Controlled edits to source pages, measured across a 10,000-query benchmark.
Result
Citations, quotations and statistics helped most; effects varied by domain.

That last point matters for adult brands: results differ by topic, so we test in your category rather than assume. The measured side of this work is on AI citation optimization.

What we change on your pages

  • Sourced statisticsNumbers with a named, dated source, placed where a question is answered.
  • Attributed quotationsShort quotes from credible experts or official documents.
  • CitationsLinks to the research and rules your claims rest on.
  • Clear passagesOne question, one answer, in a few sentences an engine can lift cleanly.

Every figure, quote and link must be real and checkable. How to structure those passages is covered on adult AEO.

Crawler settings that keep you citable

Training crawlers and search crawlers are different bots. Blocking the wrong one can remove you from AI answers without protecting anything.

Crawler or tokenWhat it is forIf you block it
GooglebotGoogle Search, including AI OverviewsYou leave Google Search entirely
Google-ExtendedA control token for Gemini training and groundingNothing in Google Search rankings
OAI-SearchBotThe index behind ChatGPT searchYou stop appearing in ChatGPT search answers

PerplexityBotPerplexity search resultsYou are less likely to be cited by Perplexity

Google also offers a site-wide switch in Search Console, explained in the next section. The technical side of crawler access is covered on AI search optimization.

The Search Console AI setting, and what it leaves out

Google announced on 3 June 2026 a Search Console control, under Settings as "Search generative AI", that decides whether a site appears in and helps ground AI Overviews, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Discover. It was tested first with a group of UK sites and reached every site by the end of August. Google says sites that opt out get no traffic or impressions from those features, and that choosing it does not count against a site in ordinary rankings.

Three limits matter when deciding. It works for the whole site only; reports say page-level controls are planned for 2027. It does not cover the Gemini app, which is governed by the separate Google-Extended token. And it is all or nothing for Google's AI surfaces, so a brand that wants its buying guides cited but its product pages kept out cannot do that with this switch alone. For most lawful adult brands, staying in and making sure the cited pages are accurate is the better trade.

When AI engines will answer adult questions

AI assistants treat adult topics with care, and how much care varies by engine, by wording and over time. In our testing, questions framed around health, safety, materials, sizing, privacy or how to choose a product are usually answered, while explicit requests are usually declined. That boundary shapes GEO for adult brands: the questions worth winning are the safe-for-work ones, and whatever page answers them needs the same calm, factual register. How those answers are laid out is covered on adult AEO.

It also means a brand's explicit or suggestive pages are unlikely to be cited at all, however good they are. The citable layer is usually the guides, the care and safety pages, the materials and sizing information, and the company pages that explain who you are; how engines pick among such pages is explored in our note on how AI engines cite adult brands.

How we test in your category

  1. Write a set of 30 to 50 real questions your buyers ask, checked against our readiness checklist, in plain, safe-for-work language, covering choosing, using, caring for and buying.
  2. Ask each question in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode, several times, because answers vary from one run to the next.
  3. Record whether your brand is named, whether your pages are cited, which competitors and sources appear, and whether anything said about you is wrong.
  4. Change the pages, wait for them to be recrawled, and run the same questions again.

The question set stays fixed so that month-to-month changes mean something. How we track the results is set out on AI citation optimization.

One passage, before and after

Before

Our premium lube is the best on the market, loved by thousands of happy customers, and totally safe for every toy you own.

After

Water-based lubricants are compatible with silicone toys; silicone-based ones can damage them over time. Our formula is water-based, and its full ingredient list is published on this page. If you have sensitive skin, patch-test first and check the list for ingredients you know you react to.

An illustrative rewrite. The second version contains claims an engine can check and reuse, and none it would have to discard: no superlatives, no unverifiable numbers, and a clear answer to the question a buyer actually asks. More examples are in our guide to citation-ready content, and how GEO differs from ordinary SEO is set out in GEO vs SEO.

How progress is judged

Each month we report, for the fixed question set: how often your brand is named, how often your pages are cited, which engines cite you and which do not, the competitors and third-party sources that appear in your place, and any inaccurate statements about your brand we found. We also watch Search Console's generative AI performance report, which Google added alongside the June control, for impressions your pages earn inside AI features. We do not promise citations; engines change, and answers vary from one run to the next. Fees are on our pricing page.

What we never do

  • Invent statistics, quotes or citations
  • Hide text for AI crawlers that people cannot see
  • Plant instructions aimed at AI models on your pages or anyone else's
  • Take on escort agencies or anyone selling sex for money

Questions

Q.01

Is GEO different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. AI engines still find sources through search indexes, so a site that cannot be crawled and indexed has nothing to be cited. GEO then shapes pages so their passages are the ones an AI answer quotes.

Q.02

Should we block AI crawlers?

Decide per crawler. Blocking a training crawler such as GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search, but blocking OAI-SearchBot does. A common approach is to allow the search crawlers and make a separate choice on training.

Q.03

Do AI engines even answer questions about adult products?

Factual, safe-for-work questions (what something is, how to choose, how to use it safely) are the ones they are most willing to answer, and exactly the ones GEO targets.

Q.04

Can you promise we will be cited?

No. AI answers vary from one query and one day to the next. We improve the likelihood and measure it, honestly.

Q.05

Should we use the Search Console setting to leave AI Overviews?

Usually not. The switch takes your entire site out of the AI answers Google shows in Search and Discover, cannot yet be set page by page, and leaves the Gemini app untouched. Most lawful brands gain more by staying in and making sure the cited pages are accurate.
